About

I’m Matt Wedel, geek. I’m an anatomist and paleontologist by day, and blog about that stuff at SV-POW! My number one hobby is stargazing, which I blog about at 10 Minute Astronomy. This blog is for everything else.

  1. Hi Matt:

Are you still accepting submissions for your “Collect Call of Cthulhu” blog post? If so, I’d like to offer my small contribution to the lurking terror. You can find my version of Old Squidface (along with a few other Lovecraftian creature designs) here: http://davinci41.deviantart.com/gallery/41722063

My take on Cthulhu dates back to the early 1990s. I did a lot of sketches and design variations before I finally committed him to a more polished form that you see here (the 90s were a busy time for me). I decided that his vestigial wings – an element that never really agreed with me – could be interpreted as large dorsal fins. And since they couldn’t be seen in this view, I didn’t bother indicating them at all. Otherwise, my interpretation lays heavy emphasis on the eerie, the atmospheric and the viscerally disturbing aspects of this character. I am currently preparing a sculpted version based on this design, so more to come in the near future.

Thank you for your time and consideration. Please let me know whether or not you’d like to include my drawing in your blog and I’ll send you a high-resolution image file. Take care.

    Sincerely,
    Curt Chiarelli

    Hi Curt,

I certainly am interested, and many thanks for the offer. I’m sorry it took me so long to get back to you. I am absolutely slammed with teaching right now, hence the lack of posting here. But if you send me stuff, I’ll get it posted ASAP. I’m at mathew.wedel@gmail.com.
